Today is the day – the opening day of the COP21 climate negotiations, and over 130 world leaders will be in attendance to signal their commitment to a strong agreement.
For the next two weeks, these leaders and their negotiating teams will begin the important work of hammering out an ambitious, equitable, and binding agreement to address climate change.
In the lead-up to the negotiations, over 174 of the 190 countries, representing well over 90 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, have submitted their commitments, allowing the COP21 negotiations to focus on the substance of the agreement. With a solid foundation already in place, we are hopeful that COP21 will live up to its high expectations. If successful, COP21 could mark the first time that every country in the world will be making a commitment to take action on climate change. Our education delegation will be there as eyewitnesses to history in the making, beginning with our staff December 2 and followed by our 10 education ambassadors December 5. Stay tuned for their blogs, unique perspectives, and photos and video straight from COP21!
