Kathy Jetn̄il-Kijiner was our keynote speaker for our 10-year anniversary celebration in December 2016. She is a world-renowned climate activist and poet from the Marshall Islands. Her poetry focuses on raising awareness of the issues and threats facing her people, from social justice issues to the rising seas caused by climate change.
On Monday, June 26, 2017 we hosted a free public forum in coordination with our 12th annual Summer Institute for Climate Change Education. Climate Change in the Age of Alternative Facts featured climate scientist and IPCC author Dr. Ben Santer and U of M Institute on the Environment Director Dr. Jessica Hellmann, with Humphrey Senior Fellow and former legislator Steve Kelley moderating. Dr. Santer and Dr. Hellmann addressed a full house at the Humphrey School’s Cowles auditorium, sharing their thoughts on climate change misconceptions and how to combat climate denial.

For three decades, the National Center for Science Education (NCSE) has focused most of its efforts on defending the teaching of evolution in the classroom. Increasingly, however, the teachers its executive director, Dr. Eugenie Scott, hears from are under fire for teaching global warming.
