Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and for the safety of our communities, we are holding the Summer Institute, originally planned to take place at Hamline University, as a virtual conference! Not only that, we are also teaming up with some fantastic partners from NOAA’s Climate Program and The Wild Center’s Youth Climate Program!

Join us on July 22–24, 2020

Climate change solutions are made in the classroom, at home, and within our communities. Let’s make the most out of our current situation by reimagining what education can be and how we can build opportunities for climate change solutions together! Virtual learning experiences offer a unique opportunity to make connections across our public and at-home learning spaces that don’t exist in the traditional system.

This three-day experience will take you beyond your computer screen, and into your backyard and neighborhood to do authentic scientific and social data collection, move your body, and make observations of the world around you. On-screen time will be segmented into at most two-hours at a time, and small group online experiences will occur daily, as well as optional evening events.

FAQs

What will the virtual experience look like?
This three-day experience will take you beyond your computer screen, and into your backyard and neighborhood to do authentic scientific and social data collection, move your body, and make observations of the world around you. On-screen time will be segmented into at most two-hours at a time, and small group online experiences will occur daily, as well as optional evening events. Stay tuned for more information over the coming weeks.

When do I need to be available?
We ask that you be available from 9:00am – 4:00pm CDT for the three days.

What technology do I need?
In order to participate fully, we require each participant to have a computer with access to the internet, microphone, and camera. You will need to be able to access Google docs, spreadsheets, and slides, and online platforms. We will also have the option to use smartphone apps for certain sessions. We will offer pre-Institute tutorials and training on how to use the digital and virtual platforms for anyone who would like to attend.

How are we increasing our security on Zoom?

Recently there have been security concerns about using Zoom for virtual events and some school administrations are preventing educators from using Zoom in classrooms. We will be using Zoom for video-based small group work and meetings.

To ensure a high level of security, we are following Zoom’s Best Practices for Securing Your Zoom Meetings and we are taking advantage of all of Zoom’s security features. Upon registering for specific sessions, you may notice that we are restricting access to authenticated users or requiring passwords. In Zoom sessions, we maintain security by admitting verified participants, monitoring chat and videos feeds, and removing participants who act out of line with our policies.

If you have concerns about using Zoom or feel that it will prevent your participation in the institute. Please message us at education@climategen.org

I already registered before you switched to virtual, do I need to register again?

We are asking everyone to fill out our new registration form for the Stay-In-stitute, as the questions have changed and we want to make sure we have all the updated information from you. You can register here.
