EXPECTATIONS: 100% of Climate Generation operations and programming are currently transitioning back from remote to mitigate risks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Once on-site operations resume, this position has the potential to be semi-remote with some required on-site expectations. Applicants must reside in Minnesota.

Climate Generation: A Will Steger Legacy empowers individuals and their communities to engage in solutions to climate change. Based in the Twin Cities, Minnesota, Climate Generation strategically engages and empowers youth, educators, decision-makers and the public to foster climate literacy and action with the goal of building a more equitable and resilient future for all.

All across the world, young people are calling for a just transition to a resilient climate future that is equitable for all. Climate Generation’s Minnesota based youth program, Youth Environmental Activists (YEA!), takes climate change action in schools, communities, and local-elected bodies, to build youth power. YEA! Campaigns is an intensive mentorship program for diverse youth ages 13–18 who want to advance climate justice in their city, town, county, or school district. Youth apply to be mentored in climate justice and healing organizing skills to lead climate action; building community power with local partners to target effective local climate solutions and systemic change. Youth learn and practice organizing and civic engagement by leading their own campaign rooted in environmental justice to shift public will and policymaker decisions.

Duties and responsibilities:

The Youth Campaign Coordinator will support Climate Generation’s Minnesota based Youth Programs by growing our local campaigns initiative in alignment with our organization’s youth programming that engages teens in the youth climate movement through education, collaboration, advocacy, and action. Scope of work will include: coordinating local youth-led campaigns for climate justice; alignment of mentorship and online curriculum across our YEA! program; recruiting and mentoring diverse students; and working collaboratively with staff and partners. This position involves regular evening work and occasional weekend work and travel.

Program (60%)

  • Facilitate in-person and virtual mentorship of student leaders and cohorts to support learning and leadership in the climate justice movement in multiple community campaigns
  • Update engaging digital training tools for student leaders to learn climate justice concepts, identity based leadership development, build community relationships, and support grassroots organizing campaigns
  • Support youth to build their skills as anti-racist leaders, and help foster a community that centers those youth most marginalized by dominant US culture
  • Align campaign work across coordinated YEA! programming with youth leadership.
  • Recruiting and engaging diverse youth across Minnesota and beyond in local campaigns in coordination with staff
  • Work collaboratively with local campaign partners from youth groups, community organizations, educators and school staff, and others to cultivate mutually beneficial and regenerative relationships
  • Evaluate and adapt programs with feedback from youth leaders and partners
  • Collaborate across youth programming and support youth events as they arise, such as our annual Youth Climate Justice Summit, school visits, and other activities.
  • Maintain open lines of communication between Youth Programs staff and senior leadership team
  • Support Director of Programs, Youth and Policy Manager and YEA! Network Coordinator with preparing reports.

Communications (30%)

  • Develop program outreach and recruitment materials
  • Mentor student leaders on their role as Climate Generation ambassadors and partners
  • Mentor student leaders to provide timely and consistent blogs and other media to share their leadership
  • Mentor student leaders to speak at peer workshops, public events, and press conferences.
  • Provide content for Climate Generation communications, including the website, monthly e-newsletter and educator e-newsletter, mailed newsletter, annual report and blogs
  • Develop and share resources and products that promote Climate Generation initiatives including webinars, workshops and presentations
  • Coordinate with Program Managers and Communications Manager to ensure programs collateral is brand consistent, current and available for outreach opportunities

Organizational Health (10%)

  • Participate as an active member of the Climate Generation team through participation in bi-monthly team meetings, team planning days, organizational antiracism commitments, and other collaborative Climate Generation activities
  • Support cross-program efforts with educators, community engagement, development, and other organization-wide events

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience in a related field, such as youth leadership development, community organizing, and/or climate justice
  • Commitment to antiracism with experience in racially and geographically diverse communities
  • Passion for climate justice and the different ways that people power can create change.
  • Ability to communicate intersectional concepts for multiple learners at different levels of understanding
  • Ability to navigate conflict and adapt to challenges
  • Ability to work collaboratively and creatively with a small and dedicated team
  • Demonstrated ability to build trusted and authentic relationships with youth and partners
  • Comfortable with technology or ability to learn, including Zoom, Google docs, Slack, Trello, and Canva
  • Bi-weekly evening and weekend work commitments
  • Committed to an equitable workplace and integrating antiracism into program planning and operations

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience organizing in local policy campaigns, such as city, school board, county, conservation district, or similar efforts
  • Experience with grassroots community organizing in diverse racial and geographic areas.
  • Strong understanding of intersectional solutions of climate and racial justice

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary range for this position is between $38,000-40,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • Full-time, exempt position, working 40 hours per week
