Minnesota Youth Climate Strike has only existed for a year, and yet we’ve become a powerhouse for youth organizing in that short time.
Beginning with strikes last spring, we have continued to build power. In September of this last year, 7,000 people striked with us. After that, we began planning strikes based on specific issues.
Right now, we are demanding that the Minnesota State Board of Investments divests from fossil fuels—and after multiple actions, we’ve succeeded in winning meetings with each of the four members of the Board, including the Governor of Minnesota. We recently partnered with the janitors at SEIU Local 26 to demand the biggest polluters in the state protect our future and respect and workers rights.
As a youth organization, we don’t have all of the resources or connections that adult organizations do. Fortunately, we have adult partners like Climate Generation to support us.
Funding and support from the staff at Climate Generation through the Youth Action Fun*d allowed us to hold a retreat this January. We spent the weekend learning from each other and our adult mentors, forming stronger connections with each other, and strategizing for the upcoming year.
The funding we received to help with the costs of a retreat allowed us tap all the potential we knew we had as youth to change the world.
