November 2019: Climate Generation Gist

Starting today, we’re joining a global conversation — 24 Hours of Reality: Truth in Action, from November 20–21.

Across these two days, we will present film screenings, discussions, webinars, and trainings to build your understanding of the climate crisis and engage in bold solutions. We’re excited to partner with the Science Museum of Minnesota, the Saint Paul Library, and Climate Reality. Explore Climate Generation’s events and discover the full offering of opportunities in St. Paul here.

We are thankful to the hundreds of supporters who joined us at Band Together or chose to support Climate Generation for Give to the Max Day. Between these two events we raised nearly $215,000 to support our programs. At Band Together, musicians shared their climate stories and issued a collective call to action to join us for the critical year ahead, leading into the November 2020 elections. We will continue to provide opportunities for engagement to use your voice, choice, and vote through bandtogethermn.org, featuring webinars, a new podcast, and more!

Our founder Will Steger recently celebrated the 30th reunion of his historic International Trans-Antarctica Expedition in Japan, where team members spoke to the impact the expedition had on their careers and called for international cooperation to address the climate crisis. The expedition’s purpose was to bring world attention to the international cooperation that managed this continent of science and to lobby the world’s leaders to ban mineral exploration and continue uninterrupted the international Antarctic Treaty.

Our education team prepared over 100 Minnesota science teachers to address the new science standards and climate change in their educational setting, in partnership with the MN Science Teachers Association and Xcel Energy; and our new humanities-focused curriculum resources were featured at the National Council of Social Studies conference in Austin, TX. Our youth leaders had a successful kick-off and are channeling the energy and skill building into the Environmental Congress on December 3 and Youth Climate Strike on December 6.

We are excited to send a delegation to COP25, including our Youth and Policy Manager, now taking place in Madrid, Spain. Read our response to the unrest in Santiago, Chile, the original host site, as well as our reaction to the official filing of the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement. Sign up for the daily digest to stay up to date on the international climate proceedings and COP webinars.

Finally, we encourage you to submit a piece of writing or artwork for our EYEWITNESS, a project of literary activism. EYEWITNESS speaks to the diverse range of backgrounds, perspectives, and histories of Minnesotans and their experiences of climate change. EYEWITNESS will be circulated in the MN Legislature, accompanied by testimony and events leading up to and on the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, April 22, 2020.
