It’s not often that a youth climate activist is chosen to be the TIME Person of the Year.
Over the course of a little over a year, Greta Thunberg has inspired and led a global youth climate movement to take to the streets on behalf of the planet we share. We know that meaningful change happens with the force of influential individuals; indeed, we have been seeing this type of leadership across our programs and in our work.
From our Band Together concert last month that featured 15 musicians who shared their stories and music to inspire action on climate change; to the youth climate strikers and leaders in our YEA! MN program who are calling on their schools, parents and policymakers to take action; to the more than 8,000 educators in our Teach Climate Network teaching climate change in their educational setting; to the leadership of Three Rivers Park District and our Climate Conversations partnership; to the hundreds of people who are sharing their climate stories with their families, in the media, and with influential leaders; these actions add up to be a powerful force for climate action.
This month we covered the COP25 climate summit through the eyes of our delegates. We amplified the message that We Are Still In together with our Congressional leaders and Minnesota partners. Our Youth and Policy Manager, Sarah Goodspeed shared her on the ground perspectives with MPR Climate Cast, through webinars, and daily blogs. Our founder Will Steger and I met with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to discuss ways we can work together to tackle climate change and advance climate change education.
Together we have laid the foundation for a momentous year and decade ahead—and I am so excited for all that we will accomplish in 2020 and beyond.
2020 marks a crucial year to catapult us into climate action, from mobilizing around the 50th anniversary of Earth Day to the critical elections in November.
During this season of thanks, I want to thank you for your dedication to our mission and programs—as we awaken a new generation of advocates to the climate crisis and leverage that awakening to build in an equitable, resilient future for all. Please join us as we expand and deepen our work in 2020 and beyond.
