Letter to Climate Change Educators

Climate change has not taken the stage in the presidential race yet, but it certainly has been in the news, including Leonardo DiCaprio’s impassioned and eloquent speech during his Oscar acceptance last week where he in part said;

Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people out there who would be most affected by this.

Some may roll their eyes at speeches like this, given by those living the life of a movie star, but DiCaprio’s speech was watched by 34.3 million people and was the most-tweeted minute of an Oscars telecast ever, with 440,000 Twitter posts in the span of 60 seconds.  This illustrates the important role those with a platform can play in raising awareness and elevating the voices of those who aren’t being heard and we applaud Leo for taking on climate change!

SI 2015In other news, our friends at the National Center for Science Education, as well as Penn State University, released two articles featuring their research on the state of climate change education in the United States this last week. Their findings highlight the difficulties that you all as educators face to integrate climate change confidently and consistently, and support the need for us to keep doing the work that we do to support you. We applaud all the work that you do to bring climate change to your classrooms and we hope you find support and resources from Climate Generation. Race and Education: A Two-Part Workshop

At these two sessions you will learn about the state of education in our community and will equip yourself with knowledge and skills; that’s how you’ll influence change. Climate Science in the Classroom: Virtual Conference

NGSS-NSTA-logoJoin NSTA on March 12, in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), for the Climate Science in the Classroom virtual conference that will feature climate scientists and education specialists who will share both their knowledge about climate science as well as classroom-ready resources that educators can use with their students.

Interdisciplinary Teaching: Building Sustainability into your Non-Science Class

InTeGrate 2Addressing issues of sustainability requires perspectives and expertise from all kinds of people, that is an ‘interdisciplinary lens’. Focusing on sustainability and climate change issues, this webinar (Wednesday, March 9 @ 3:00CST) features three faculty (philosopher, biologist, and geologist) who are currently using interdisciplinary approaches in both science and non-science courses. Participants will experience how scientific data and principles can be introduced into humanities courses, and how science and engineering students can become more comfortable discussing philosophical issues. Register by Tuesday, March 8.
