Letter to Climate Change Educators

CLU March Letter How are you teaching about climate change? Are you teaching a CG lesson to your students? What is your favorite educational resource?  Have you implemented a service learning project at your school?  Do you have a twitter account where you retweet about climate change news? Any way you do it, we’d love to hear about and invite you to share it as a presenter at our Summer Institute for Climate Change Education! Our agenda is shaping up to include speakers from around the country and opportunities for you to engage in hands on activities on climate change science, energy and policy.  We’d love to see you there!

nsta15 NSTA National Conference on Science Education

Join CG’s Director of Education, Kristen Poppleton at the National Science Teacher’s Association National Conference on Science Education, March 12-15. Climate Generation and other members of the CLEAN Network are going to be busy at the NSTA Conference in Chicago in just a few weeks.  Check out this list of presentations on climate literacy.  We hope to see you there!

There will be 1,500 innovative presentations, sessions, hands-on workshops and over 400 exhibits. Educational trips, short courses, symposiums, and an all-day NGSS event will also be happening.

Last month, our Director of Education Kristen Poppleton was invited to attend an afternoon at the White House with longtime education partner and White House Champion of Change in climate education Craig Johnson.  The timing couldn’t have felt more fitting as we prepare to celebrate our 10th annual Summer Institute for Climate Change Education at the School of Environmental Studies, where Craig teaches and where our partnership began in 2006. The White House event recognized eight outstanding climate change educators and brought together many of the partners and friends in climate change education we have developed over the last ten years.

Join us June 15-17, 2015 for a chance to hear from experts in climate science, climate change education, and climate solutions. You will also engage in hands-on activities and learn how our curriculum supports language arts, social students, and science standards (including Next Generation Science Standards). Resources from the Climate Change Community

nnocci The National Network for Ocean and Climate Change Interpretation (NNOCCI) is now accepting applications for their Fall 2015 study circles! A NNOCCI Study Circle is a cross-disciplinary learning group made up of peers with expertise from fields of professional interpretation, climate and ocean sciences and communications and cultural sciences. Please share the message below with any of your colleagues, friends, professional networks and list-serves. If there are any institutions or colleagues that you would like to personally recommend to NNOCCI, definitely let them know so they can be on the lookout for their applications. Applications are due March 16, 2015. Please email nnocci@neaq.org with questions or concerns.

SpringcastingJoin guest speaker Dr. Toby Ault from Cornell University for a webinar about Springcasting on March 3, 2015 (12:30pm East, 11:30am Cen, 10:30 Mtn & AZ, 9:30 Pac). New for 2015, researchers are using daily weather data to estimate this start of spring, or “springcast,” in near real-time at every location in the United States. This year, we’ll be sharing these springcasts with lilac observers, inviting them to help us determine whether these predictions are correct at their location. Dr. Toby Ault, researcher at Cornell University and lead on the springcasting effort, will shed some light on what goes into a springcast, and explain their utility. Click here to register. This event is presented by the USA National Phenology Network and the Emerging Climate Risk Lab of Cornell.

ITM picInnovate to Mitigate wants students or student groups to submit ideas about how to address climate change by reducing greenhouse gases. People around the world are working hard on this problem. To meet the big challenges we face, we need good ideas from everyone. This challenge encourages young people to unlock their immense potential for finding solutions! Students will compete for a chance to win prize money and earn recognition from peers, community and experts. Initial submissions are due March 9th, so click on the link to register and submit your idea.

YRE picJoin the Young Reporters for the Environment competition and enrich your students STEM experiences with the opportunity to be environmental journalists! This competition is open for students ages 13-21. The deadline is March 15, 2015.There will be great prizes that all students will love. By taking part in the Young Reporters for the Environment competition, your students will: engage in active citizenship, build research and communication skills, inform citizens about critical environmental issues and their solutions, tell these important stories through writing, photos, or video, connect with youth around the globe, and make a difference in their community. Moment of Inspiration

Start the Switch, with a partnership with the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, inspires and empowers students by giving them the knowledge, skills and support to start taking action for a safe climate future in their schools and communities! This short video shows students how to communicate about climate change. This video could be great inspiration for the Young Reporters for the Environment Project.
