Climate Lesson Update: June 2013

img 2065It’s been a great summer so far. We’re in between a successful Summer Institute in June (see more photos on Facebook!) and another exciting Institute this August. Both events have filled up and are unique from any of our past trainings in terms of their location and content. The event in August is full, but there is still time to join the waiting list (contact John Smith).

Then, there was President Obama’s speech on climate change, revealing his “Climate Action Plan” (watch the video), which calls for an end to subsidies for oil and coal companies and investment in clean energy sources. This speech might even be enough to make Bob Collins optimistic.

Looking for a summer project to do with your kids? Check out the Youth Voices of Change video contest – start a project, or just share your dream project, in a film and you could win great prizes, including a $350 seed grant for your organization or school. Learn more at the Youth Voices of Change website. The submission deadline has been extended to August 1st. Winners announced the following week and prizes will be awarded at the MN State Fair!

Reflecting on the past school year has proven fruitful too. For example, read this great blog post from Saint Paul teacher, Tim Chase, who got to teach the class of his dreams: an urban environmental sciences class at an outdoor classroom. We’re proud to say that our Minnesota’s Changing Climate curriculum was able to help him make his dream a reality. Way to go Mr. Chase!

This Month’s “Moment of Inspiration” = WATCH: Fourth graders get solar panels on their school (This is something new we are trying. Each month will have a “moment of inspiration” that shares something that gives us hope for a bright future.)

Rock on,
