Education

Our Director of Education Kristen Poppleton joined 50 other educators selected as curators for the National Science Teacher’s Association in Boston.  Kristen is receiving training on the Next Generation Science Standards and identifying resources that support them.  She is using all she learns to update the Will Steger Foundation’s curricula.

Learn about the impacts and indicators of climate change in our latest webinar: Global Changes, Local Impacts. It’s a look inside the latest research in the National Climate Assessment which seeks to compile the known impacts and indicators of climate change on the United States. Engage youth in climate change solutions through video! Youth Voices of Change is our annual video contest for grades 4-12. All students have to do is make a video that raises awareness or describes their plan of action about climate change. Finalists have their videos shown on the big screen at the Minnesota State Fair. Winners will receive great prizes. One lucky young person will get a $350 seed grant for their project. Learn more and submit your video today.

Summer InstituteDon’t miss the early-bird rate for the Summer Institute! Register now for the Midwest’s climate change education event of the year. All attendees will get 2 nights lodging and 3 days of meals, world-class keynote presenters, guest expert scientists and educators, curriculum, materials and more! Emerging Leaders

Exclusive Youth Summit with Gov. Dayton
Youth Lobby DayFollowing on the heels of an outstanding Youth Lobby Day at the MN State Capitol, high school and college age youth will meet with Will Steger and Governor Dayton for an exclusive youth summit on Minnesota’s clean energy future. The meeting will take place on April 22nd, at 2:30 pm, prior to the Clean Energy & Jobs Earth Day Rally in the Capitol Rotunda. The Will Steger Foundation is coordinating with the Sierra Student Coalition, MPIRG, and MN Youth Environmental Network for the event. Registration required. Youth Lobby Day Over 125 young people turned out for the Youth Environmental Lobby Day on March 31st, hosted by the Will Steger Foundation and MPIRG, calling for a stronger state Renewable Energy Standard to provide all Minnesotans with at least 50% of their electricity from renewable energy by 2030, and to expand energy efficiency programs that work. High School Sophomore, Kendra Roedl, was as the event and shares her reflection.

Climate CastEvery Thursday, MPR meteorologist Paul Huttner joins The Daily Circuit to talk about the latest research on our changing climate and the consequences we’re seeing here in Minnesota and worldwide. Will Steger is mentioned in the broadcast.

MPRnewsFormer UnitedHealth Group executive Lois Quam has been named chief operating officer of the international conservation group Nature Conservancy. She credits Will Steger with influencing her move to The Nature Conservancy.
